CSIRO has concluded a project commissioned by APPEA's Marine Environmental Science Working group, to investigate the impact of marine seismic surveys on plankton. Early results from this research indicate that, although zooplankton biomass within the survey area were reduced, it recovered only 3 days after the completion of the survey. Importantly, there appeared to be no discernible regional impacts from the modelled seismic survey.

Chevron reaffirms Great Australian Bight drill plans for 2017 or 2018, despite BP pulling out

Energy firm Chevron has reaffirmed its plan to drill four exploration wells in the Great Australian Bight, despite oil giant BP withdrawing from its exploration of the region.

A Senate committee hearing in Adelaide was told by Chevron Australia's general manager of exploration David Moffatt the company was still planning to drill in 2017 or 2018 and believed work oil prices would rebound.

Dr Moffat expressed confidence in Chevron's ability to drill without mishap.

More than 60 new species have been discovered in the Great Australian Bight as part of one of the largest whole-of-ecosystem studies undertaken in Australian waters.  The new discoveries were made during the initial three years of the Great Australian Bight Research Program.

The $20 million program is a collaboration between BP, CSIRO, the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), the University of Adelaide, and Flinders University. The four-year program aims to provide a whole-of-system understanding of the environmental, economic and social values of the region.
